HISTORY OF GAGA. For the past 43 years, groups under the umbrella of Eugene Friends Church have made Spring Break trips to Mexico to build houses and friendships. We have worked in cooperation with Mexican agencies to identify families that need secure housing. Our focus is on building for single women with children in hopes of seeing kids stay in school and enjoy the better health and safety that comes with a solid house and sanitation. Partnership with local social agencies and municipal government is important for us to be a team rather than risk any sense that we know how to solve the problems of another culture.
We are a group that identifies with Jesus’ concern for the poor and oppressed and we see this as a real way to follow him. Most of our team comes from some kind of faith community though there is no affiliation requirement to be part of this project. As a group, we are very ordinary folks, most with little building experience, and all leadership is volunteer. Minimal overhead allows dollars to go as far as possible in getting homes built.

THE TRIP
In Mexico, we stay at a fairly secure compound, where we camp together in tents. We have flushing toilets, a clean and coordinated kitchen space that keeps us fed, a basic shower building and neighbors that we love. Most of us travel in caravans together from different places, but we all look forward to new friendships and the community that comes with serving as the hands of Jesus to our world. Our lives have been made rich as we Get Away from our comfortable lives and Give Away our time, abilities and resources.
The trip takes place each year during Spring Break. More exact details are located in the "Cost and Registration" information.
COST AND REGISTRATION
The cost for the 2027 trip is estimated at $1100.00 per person. The $1100 covers a $50 registration fee to GAGA (which gets you your T-shirt, manuals, and allows the ministry of GAGA to continue), $350 is used to purchase building materials for our project. $350 covers the costs of personal travel insurance, support vehicles with trailers, and food in Mexico. The cost for vehicle gas, Mexico travel insurance, and 2 shared hotel nights is not known until the trip is completed, but a casual estimate might be $350 each.
Total costs for youth 11 to 15 years old is $350.00 and for those 10 years old and younger, $50.00. This reduced price is to encourage family participation.
Participants pay for their own food on the road to and from Mexico.

The trip will take place during the 4J Spring Break -We will plan to depart at 6:00 am on Thursday, March 19 and return on Saturday, March 27.
